About thinking-ape

Writing is thinking. So we built a place for your thoughts.

This is a platform for documenting and sharing your notes.

What this is

thinking-ape is where you publish the notes you write as you learn from a book, a video, or a paper (source).

You add the source. You publish your notes on it, a chapter, a timestamp, a section at a time. Other people can subscribe to that source and read along.

Writing is thinking

thinking-ape is built on a single conviction: writing is thinking.

If you really want to understand a topic, don't read about it, write about it. The act of explaining connects the dots and commits them to memory in a way that passive reading never will. The struggle is not a side effect of learning. The struggle is the learning. When you sit down to say what the main idea was, and the words don't come easily, that difficulty is your brain assembling the thing for the first time.

You don't understand it yet

We always think we understand in the moment.

While you're studying, everything feels clear. The argument lands. The chapter makes sense. The lecture is obvious. But that clarity is borrowed; it's coming from the page in front of you, not from you. Close the book and try to explain it to someone a week later, and the whole structure collapses.

This is the illusion of competence. You were recognizing the idea, not building it.

Real comprehension only shows up when you can relay an idea so that another person understands it. If you can't explain it clearly, you don't understand it yet.

Which is why the notes have to be public. Writing for yourself lets you get away with a shorthand only you can read. Writing for a stranger doesn't.

Why notes deserve to be published

Most notes die. They sit in an app you stop opening, in a highlight export nobody reads, in a notebook in a drawer.

Published notes behave differently. They get written for a reader, which means they get written properly. They accumulate into something you can point at. And they're useful to the next person working through the same source, because the thing they needed wasn't a summary, it was someone's honest attempt to explain it.

Your notes stop being private residue and become a body of work.

Human effort, for human benefit

In the age of AI, some will forget how to do the simple things. They will stand on the shoulders of giants and forget what the ground looks like. But there will also be those who cherish the work, who insist on knowing the how and the why. Those are the people who will become the next giants.

You can outsource your thinking. You cannot outsource your understanding.

For the technicians, for the thinkers

The polymath dream is alive again. The material has never been more available; what's scarce is the willingness to metabolize it.

thinking-ape is a platform where self-directed learners, people internalizing books, manuscripts and lectures, can document and share their notes. Build an audience as you build your understanding. Produce content with a purpose, and end up with assets instead of highlights you'll never open again.

AI is not a thinking ape.
So be a thinking ape.

Take upon yourself the burden of thinking and understanding. Reject intellectual atrophy.

We'll keep the record.

In a line

Document what you learn.
Writing is thinking. This is where the writing goes.
Notes worth publishing.
If you read, you should write.
Your notes, organized by what you read them in.
Private notes rot. Publish them.
Write for a reader and you'll write it properly.
You can outsource your thinking, but not your understanding.
AI is not a thinking ape; be a thinking ape.
Human effort, for human benefit.
A record of what you actually understood.
Read. Write. Publish.

What are you learning right now?

Document your first note.
